What Is Lawn Edging?

Lawn edging is a great way to add something new and exciting to your garden. Despite sounding fancy, it’s really just a way to tidy up the edges of your lawn and make them look neat without doing lots of work.

Lawn edging is when you create specific and distinct lines around the outside of your lawn. You’ll be encouraging the grass to stay and grow within these lines and it’ll help your garden to stay looking tidy, even when you don’t have time to garden.

How To Create Lawn Edging

We couldn’t give you some great ideas without telling you how to create the lawn edging now could we?! The process to create lawn edging is a simple one, so simple that we’ve created this short step-by-step guide for you to follow!

Step 1 - Cut your edges and remove the excess turf.

You’ll need to start by cutting your border. Decide where you want your lawn to finish and remove the turf so you expose the soil.

TIP: For extra straight lines, use a piece of rope or string to make sure you achieve this!

Step 2 - Mow your lawn

Now you want to mow your lawn. Cut your grass so it’s short, this will allow you to better see the new edging you’ve created.  This would be a great opportunity to use a grass trimmer to make sure you have no grass overflowing the new edging line you’ve created.

You can achieve this step with both a lawn mower and a lawn strimmer. Stimmers are great for larger gardens since the majority are cordless but you could also find cordless lawn mowers too.

Step 3 - Cut the excess grass

Now you’ve got your straight line and your lawn has been mowed, it’s now time to create the straight line we’re going for. Grab some garden sheers and snip away at the excess and overflowing grass to ensure you have a straight line for your lawn border.

That’s how you create a lawn edge! A mega simple process that could be done within an hour, maybe even quicker with some helping hands.

Lawn Edging Ideas

Let’s get onto the fun part! Now you know exactly what lawn edging is, it’s time to find the best design for you and your garden.

There are so many different designs and styles to choose from. You could choose a traditional style to match your home, maybe you want to choose something to match the surrounding area like woodland, you could even go modern and add some great features into your garden.

There are so many fun and exciting ways to create the perfect lawn. You could have a decorative lawn, a simple lawn or a modern lawn. All of these ideas will need a good bit of lawn maintenance, there is a wide range of tools available to help cut back those untidy and overgrown lawns.

Here are some fun and exciting ways to create your own lawn edging.

Pebbles

This is a super simple way to create lawn edging in your garden if you’re looking for something easy to start out with. This style is perfect for those with a smaller garden, or even ideal if you’re trying to create a beachy look to your outdoor area.

For this idea, all you’ll need to do is grab yourself some pebbles of your choice. The smaller the pebbles, the more traditional this look will be. If you’re wanting a modern look, try going for all white pebbles.

Once you’ve got the pebbles of your choice, you just need to fill your new lawn edging with these pebbles and organise or position them how you please.

Flowers

If you’re a keen gardener then this is a great option for you. There’s nothing better than getting outside in the summer to see your bright blossoming flowers bursting with life and beautiful butterflies and bees gathering on them.

All you need to do is find a variety of flowers and get planting. Make sure to leave enough room for your flowers to grow, spread them evenly throughout the border. You could always get yourself some small fencing or trellising too to help determine the border better.

If you’re new to gardening or want to get into it more, there are some great tips available for beginner gardeners!

TIP: This is a great option if you’re looking at getting kids into gardening

Bricks

Creating lawn edging doesn’t need to be fancy, using items like bricks is a great way to create a fantastic look on a budget! All you’ll need for this idea is some bricks

Start by gathering your bricks and placing them evenly around the border. You can either place them on top of the soil flush with the new edge of your grass, or you could dig small holes and bury them slightly, leaving the top of the brick exposed.

For an added bonus, you could merge this idea and the one above by adding some beautiful flowers to your border!

Decking and Pebbles

During the summer months, a big garden project is always fun and our next idea is just that! If you’re wanting a total garden to revamp, what better way to do this than by adding some decking to your garden.

All you’ll need is some decking of your choice (there are some great guides on how to install decking available) and some pebbles to add to your edging. Since this idea includes decking, it would be ideal to add larger pebbles or stones in bright white or grey colours to add to the modern look.

This is also a great chance to add some brand new garden furniture and throw some fun garden parties to show off all of your hard work.

Fountains

If you’re wanting to go a step further and create a water-filled border then now is your chance. For this idea you’ll want to make sure the edging you’re creating isn’t in the way of where anybody walks, you don’t want anyone to fall in!

There are some fantastic guides on installing fountains available but always consult a professional if you’re unsure. This idea is also going to need a larger section of edging so it’s ideal for those who’ve got bigger gardens.
