How To Trim Hedges

So, how do you trim your hedges?
Step 1
Before you start trimming any hedges or plants, it’s important to remember to gear up with safety equipment. Flying debris is always a risk so gloves and eye goggles should be a priority.
This is especially important if you’re using an electric trimmer or a petrol trimmer since they go at faster speeds compared to manual gardening tools.
Step 2
Now you’re ready to start. Your first step is going to be removing the branches. These are the obvious overgrown branches that you just don’t want hanging around. You could also use a piece of string to help ensure you cut at a straight line.
Tip: Clean your equipment and your cutting blade after removing diseased branches. This will stop your grass trimmers from spreading any plant diseases.
Step 3
During this process, it’s important to protect the branches and stems you want to keep. These will be the important stems that keep the hedge itself up and growing. Stick to cutting the branches that are overgrown or stray.
Step 4
During the cutting process, it’s important to remember that hedges should be narrower at the top and wider at the bottom. This means you’ve got more leeway when you’re cutting at the top of the hedge.
The thicker branches should remain at the bottom, giving your hedges a full and healthy look.
Step 5
This next step is a simple one, you need to clear the debris once you’ve cut the branches and overgrown leaves off. Not only does it look untidy, but any leaves that may have had a disease like rust could also then infect the other very healthy leaves.
