Buttermere Sailbeck: Almost 180 runners braved high temperatures, humidity and the threat of thunderstorms for one of the toughest medium- length Lakeland races. Borrowdale's now veteran Simon Booth was the only competitor to break the one and a half hour barrier, finishing a minute in front of team-mates Morgan Donnelly and Jim Davies. A veteran runner also won the ladies' race. Helene Whitaker (nee Diamantedes, Harrogate) had a close race with Kate Bailey (Merionydd), with Helen Garrett (Ambleside) in third place. As it was a club championship counter, there were plenty of CFR representatives, one of whom, Peter Crompton, was first MV50 in 25th place overall. W Helliwell (FRA) took the MV60 prize, while Keswick's Lynn Thompson was first LV50. With five runners in the first ten finishers, Borrowdale easily took the team prize, while Ambleside triumphed in the ladies' team.
Lordstones-Wainstones: Northumberland Fell Runners' Charles Stead had a two and a half minute margin over Paul Lowe (North Yorkshire Moors AC) at the end of a race that was closely fought until the final climb, where Stead chose a much better line. In third place was Joe Blackett (Dark Peak), first MV40, a further two and a half minutes adrift. Indeed, veterans were well to the fore as Paul Kelly (Durham) was next home, claiming the MV50 prize, closely followed by Peter Wilkin (Thirsk & Sowerby). First MV55, in seventh place was Rob Burn (Thirsk & Sowerby) who was chased home by Ben Grant (Harrogate). In tenth place came MV60, Dave Tait (Dark Peak) making five of the first ten finishers over 50. Continuing the theme, Kay Neesam (New Marske), LV40, was first across the line. She finally overcame the challenge of Fay Potton on the final climb. 56 runners braved the warm, humid conditions to complete the race.
Mytholmroyd: Adam Breaks (Calder Valley) had a lead of two minutes over David Roome (Bowland) at the finish of a very hot race. Third-placed Andy Wrench (Todmorden) was first veteran and Jack Holt (Clayton-le-Moors) was the leading MV50, in an excellent ninth place. Calder Valley duo, Gayle Sugden and Anne Johnson battled out the ladies' race, with Gayle coming out on top and Anne taking the veterans' prize. Dick Spendlove (Calder Valley) and Barry Thackery (Dark Peak) took the MV60 and MV70 categories respectively. Nidd Valley's Sue Morley and Lyn Eden were winners of the LV50 and LV60 race.
