Cutting Copper Pipe

Cutting copper pipe is not a difficult job, especially with the help of a tube cutter. These are available in two basic sizes, mini (2-22mm) and standard (3-30mm). When using these tools you are left with a much cleaner and more square cut than with alternatives such as a hacksaw. Moreover tube cutters represent a much safer option.

First, measure the length of the pipe that you require and mark with a pencil. Once you are happy with the length that you have measured, place the tube cutter over the pipe so that the cutting wheel aligns with the mark and then tighten the screw. Next, rotate the cutter around the pipe, carefully and gradually tightening the screw until you have cut though the pipe.

Then you must remove the burr on the inside of the cut end of the pipe. This is done by inserting the tube cutter's triangular shaped reamer and rotating the entire tool. Ensure that no copper fragments remain in the pipe as these could cause damage to other parts of the system.

Finally, clean the outside of the pipe with wire wool to ensure that you create a good smooth surface for the joint, thus ensuring a sound, watertight seal.
